Focus For Humanity
Providing grants to help Photographers Focus on Humanity

This is one of our two main awards – an annual fellowship of up to US$10,000 for a non full-time photographer keen to focus on photography as a career and probably within the humanitarian or cultural field, but who needs that final push or help to overcome that last barrier that is stopping them turning full-time.
The fellowship is awarded by means of a competitive portfolio review and an assessment of an online application form. The lucky recipient has the choice of either undertaking their own assignment or working with one of the Advisory Council on a new assignment with an NGO.
Included in the grant is mentoring with one of the Guild members, business and digital marketing coaching and advice and a grant of up to US$3,000 towards new equipment.
You can find out more about the eligibility criteria and submission rule and processes by clicking the tabs above.
Applying is a simple 4-step process.
Step 1 – You must register on the FFH website and have received your FFH photoshelter account login details to be able to complete your submission. You can register by clicking on this link.. Please note uplaoding of images is ONLY allowed as part of a grant submission.
Step 2 – Check your eligibility criteria. Your application will be invalid if you do not meet the eligibility criteria. These are detailed on the neighboring tab, eligibility.
Step 3 – The photographer must upload 8-10 JPEG images as a supporting portfolio. Image files sized to longest dimension at 3000 pixels, 300 dpi, saved as JPEGs with standard compression no lower than 8 on the JPEG scale. Image files should be numbered and named in the order in which the applicant would like the images to be viewed. When uploading into the FFH Photoshelter account you will be asked to enter the name of the grant (eg Fellowship). The software will then create a dedicated folder including your name and the date of your upload under the grant name. A full tutorial on how to do this is available here.
Step 4 – The online application form covers all the mandatory information. In addition there is an option to submit a supplementary document which can be uploaded via the form, and must be submitted with the following filename format: Grantname-photographername.doc eg fellowship-marcoryan.doc. A Pdf document or Apple version of Word (.docx) are also acceptable formats. This supplementary document should be no more than one side of A4 paper and can be used to expand or amplify why you should be chosen, what project you might undertake or what unique angles or aspect you would wish to bring to the panel’s consideration.
Individual photographers who are not yet presently engaged in the business of creating and selling or licensing imagery.
Photographers can be from any country or region, although the submission must be made in English.
The application must be submitted by the photographer through the Focus For Humanity website.
A photographer may submit only one application per year for the Foundation Fellowship.
Each submission may contain only one supplementary project proposal.
Applications will not be automatically carried forward from one year to the next. However, an applicant may re-submit a project that was not awarded a grant in a previous year.
